Nadia Elkharadly: Out and about in Toronto

At any given time in our fair city of Toronto, Ontario there is always something going on.  From music, fashion, film and the arts, everyone’s taste can be accommodated.  I feel like more often than not I always talk about events after the fact – I’ve had my fun and I’m telling my lovely readers all about it.  So today I not only want to talk about events I’ve been to recently, but highlight a few of the current goings on in the city in the hopes that some of you out there will partake in the fun and maybe tell ME all about it.

Sky Angels and Toronto Fire fighters Charity Calendar Launch Party

Last Thursday my partner in crime Mark Munroeand I attended this fantastic event at Tattoo Rock Parlour.  Not only did it feature the sexy men that make up Toronto’s Fire Fighting force, but some of the beautiful ladies that serve as flight attendants on Air Canada, also known as the Sky AngelsThis event wasn’t just an equal opportunity hottie fest – both Sky Angels and Fire Fighters were present to promote the sales of their respective calendars.  The Sky Angels “Virtues” Calendar and its proceeds support the Children’s Aid Foundation, and the Fire Fighter’s to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.  Two great charities, lots and lots of gorgeous people, and even more people showing up just to stare, worship and adore them.  Oh, and did I mention the musical entertainment was provided by none other than Edwin of I Mother Earth and Crash Karma Fame?  Good music, gorgeous people and not one, but two great causes.  It was a great way to spend Thursday night.

Events this week

Toronto after Dark Film Festival

Just in time for Halloween, Toronto’s most macabre film festival is well underway.  The Toronto After Dark Film Festivalis now in its seventh year, and it runs until this Friday.  Playing the best horror, sci-fi and cult films that you may or may not have ever heard of, this unique festival gets better every year, expanding to nine nights and screening 20 feature films and several short films as well.  Check out the website for screening times and event information, and try to get down to the newly restored Bloor Hot Docs Cinema to see what all the scary fuss is about.

Bend Sinister at Cherry Cola

If you’re looking for something to do tomorrow night, why not stop by Cherry Cola for some awesome West Coast music?  All the way from Vancouver, Bend Sinister will be rockin the Cherry Cola stage with The Manvils.  Event info here.  I’ve seen these guys play before and it was a great show and a great time, I highly recommend coming out!

S.O.S FASHION WEEK EDITION | ARTHUR MENDONCA AFTER PARTY | DJ CHUCK BARRETT

Those of you partaking in MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week will surely be out and about, checking out dazzling designs on the runways and looking for the best after parties to rub elbows with the beautiful people in their beautiful clothes.  Thursday night Maison Mercer will host the after part for acclaimed designer Arthur Medonça. With a 4am liquor license, you’ll be sure to run into some models, designers and fashionable hangers-on.

DJ Morgan Shim at Church Aperitivo

Dear friends, delicious food and dance music – put those things together and you’ve got my upcoming Friday night at one of my favourite restaurants in the city, Church Aperitivo.  If you can make it during the week between 5-7pm, you can partake in the wonderful Italian tradition of “Aperitivo”; scrumptious appetizers that come free with the purchase of drinks!  But if you can’t make it that early, come on down Friday night for some drinks, food and the musical stylings of DJ Morgan Shim, a great DJ and all around awesome dude.  I’ll be the one dancing off the calories from my delicious dinner!  (Try the meatballs, they’re to die for.)

If you prefer rock music and straight liquor to dance and hip hop and real food, head to the Bovine on Friday for a triple bill of epic proportions.  Big John Bates, The Mercy Now and The Blue Stones will be rocking the Bovine Stage with their signature rockabilly and blues tunes.  It’s sure to be a kick ass time, and if I have time to bar-hop you’ll surely be seeing me there too!

Happy Halloween – It’s Party time!

With Halloween falling on a Wednesday this year, the party options will be starting this weekend.  Here are just a couple of my recommendations.

Friday night:

The Dakota Tavern hosts Toronto trio Catl’s Halloween Dance party.  Having just opened for Alabama Shakes, Catl are riding the wave of success right into an American tour.  But before they head stateside they want to start the Halloween weekend off with a night of drinking and dancing with their hometown fans.  Costumes are welcome, as long as dancing shoes are an integral part.

Saturday night:

Apocalypse Killers (featuring Ian Blurton) the self-proclaimed “world’s 2nd best Alice Cooper/Turbonegro tribute band” will be taking the stage at the Bovine this Saturday for a sure to be killer Halloween party.  There will 20 guest singers that encompass some of the best indie musicians in the city.  And considering it’s the Bovine, the crowd will surely be eclectic and the costumes will definitely be wild and entertaining.

Next Tuesday I will share some more Halloween Party fun and some of my weekend adventures.  Until then, enjoy your week and be sure to take part in some of the amazing stuff going on right here in Toronto.

Until next time,

Xo
