Peter Montreuil – Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself

Editor’s Note: Peter is a good friend to all of us at DBAWIS. He has graciously consented to join us here and be a contributing writer as often as he can. Please welcome Peter to Don’t Believe a Word I say….

It was an honour to be asked to contribute a weekly column to “Don’t Believe A Word I Say”, and I hope to match the standards set by the rest of the writing team. Here’s a little about me, as well as things that I will, or won’t, write about.

I am in a committed relationship with Lois, a woman who truly “gets” me. Retired for just over a year from the federal government, I share an apartment in West Toronto with my cat Reg. My hobbies include plastic aircraft modelling, the study of military aviation, history in general and listening to most types of music.

Over the last four years I have been introduced to the very vibrant live indie music scene in the GTA and have, along the way, made a number of friends, including musicians, photographers, promoters et al. The calibre of these talented people truly is second to none, in my opinion, and it is a real pleasure to be able to do my bit to promote their work.

You will be hearing about many of them over the coming months. I freely “share” band and show announcements on my Facebook timeline, where every so often I also post something that I call “indiesessions”, which features 5 or 6 videos of indie music, with special emphasis given to GTA bands. (Note that I have a very liberal interpretation of the boundaries of the GTA.)

I will also be writing about Life in general, attempting, at times, to give you my explanation of the whole damned thing. Forty years of dealing with the public in person has given me a very interesting perspective on this subject.

Politics and controversy will rarely feature in my column, for two reasons. Firstly, there are other writers on this blog who express their viewpoints on these issues very well indeed, and also, anyone who visits my timeline will have no doubt about my political leanings. Secondly, I will try to use this column as a respite from the “drinking out of a firehose” influx of information which bombards us constantly.

This column will be leavened with humour, (where appropriate!), and I look forward to sharing my particular take with you on everything from growing up as one of ten people in a house with one bathroom, through adventures behind a government desk for 40 years all the way to the great live music which is right under many people’s noses.

I am a neophyte at this and am learning as I go. I welcome suggestions and constructive criticisms and am not afraid to admit when I am proven wrong. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Enjoy the Ride

A Note from Peter….

” Please note that the majority of the photos in this column were taken by Pat Blythe, at various hoolies on Bathurst Street. The James Blonde picture was sent as a Polaroid, furnished by the band, and I have no idea where Bob got the kitties video, but I laugh every time I watch it.”

A confirmed cat person,  Peter dabbled with being a water boy , a paper boy and an altar boy before finally settling for a career with the Canadian government. Once, in his youth, he ate a dutch oven full of mashed potatoes to win a 5 cent bet with his sister Mary’s boyfriend. (Of course, he was much younger and a nickel went a lot farther.) He has retired to palatial “Chez Montreuil”, sharing it with his diabetic cat Reg. He’s very happy to have his dear Lois in his life.  Military aviation and live music are  among other interests of his, and he tries to get out to as many shows as he can. He will be here every Thursday for your enlightenment.
