Bob’s Completely Unfocused Journal of Important Issues (wherein the Ukraine, Covid, The Beatles, blind truckers, semi-famous people, and more, collide in a cacophony of broken glass, spilt drinks, and trips to the bathroom, and converge to brighten your day …or not)

Deserved or not, Human Beings have been firmly sequestered at the top of the food chain on this planet for the past 4 or 5 thousand years.

As far as planets go, out of the Gazillion or so that zip through space in their little orbits around almost as many stars, we lucked out and got one you can honestly label as a Paradise.

Earth can sustain many forms of life, serve an abundance of flora and fauna both beautiful and functional, and has a climate and eco-system that, at its worst, is livable everywhere, Add to that, enough water to meet the needs of both animals and plants, and we have a fine piece of real estate here that is both rare and unique beyond the imagination.

So how is it, after thousands of years of being blessed with it, do we treat it like dirt? I mean, it IS dirt, but …uh …fuck, you know what I mean. We treat it badly, we take it for granted, we ignore our role as its caretakers, its caregivers, and its grateful benefactors.

If Earth is our parent, we are lousy, shitty, children. Most of us know this and want to do something about it, but we are not in charge. A small but powerful group of people have manipulated society into believing that money and possessions are far more important than people, and deep down, gut-wise, we know they are wrong, yet …here we are again …in dire need of common sense and guiding lights.

Because of the Pandemic, and now, the complicated situation in the Ukraine, I am having trouble dealing with the everyday problems that personally affect me and you that now seem miniscule, dwarfed by these overwhelming realities we have no control over, even though we outnumber the perpetrators and causes of these problems by a wide margin. Tragically, the loud, powerful, minority and those who support them, are negatively impacting on the rest of us …again …because we …as a species …are collectively as smart as a box of hammers. We need to learn to ACT instead of REACT.

That said, as I type this, I see caution being embraced by world leaders, patience over knee-jerk response, and people everywhere rising up in protest, making their voices heard. We seem to be getting a little better at dealing with these attacks on humanity and peace, but still …once again …the Tail is Wagging the Dog.

Bob’s Unfocused Journal – This Are What I Is Thinking About When I Can Stop Thinking About The Stuff I Just Mentioned That We All Can’t Stop Thinking About

It is probably a defense mechanism, but I find that when I am overwhelmed by important events, my brain races to find something …anything …to take my mind off of the BIG PICTURE. A scroll through my FB Newsfeed or skimming through the 1000 TV channels will usually upturn a rock and something will crawl out from under it and get my attention for a few minutes. I will always be grateful for people’s obsessions, world view, concerns, and opinions, mostly because (I hope this doesn’t sound mean) they make me laugh or engage me with the mundane or fascination with things I find (I hope this doesn’t sound unkind or arrogant even though it kind of is) silly.

Like this, for example ….

The Ongoing Worship of Everything Beatles or The Church of Elvis is no longer the only Religion with more collectibles than the Cult of Jesus

I am firmly convinced that this is never going to end ….

P.J O’Rourke, Ivan Reitman, and Sally Kellerman Bite the Bullet

As we lose our heroes and Pop Culture Icons, most of us respond by saying what a lousy year this is and even more, especially in the case of P.J., post a message of condolences, even though they have never heard of him before, or haven’t thought about him in decades. A Conservative Republican to a fault, yet still very witty, astute, and likable.

When Reitman died, I was saddened by it, but almost immdeiately, my thoughts turned to a dozen different people and things it reminded me of. How’s Danny Aykroyd doing? I miss John Candy. Belushi smashing Steven Bishop’s guitar on the stairs in Animal House, the brilliance of Bill Murray and Ghostbusters, and the much missed Harold Ramis. My thought processes, unable to stay focused on Ivan’s passing, released the brakes and sent me careening down the highway of memories triggered by my inability to relax long enough to stay in the moment. It can be unsettling …not being able to concentrate on what has your attention because (apparently) your subconscious has decided if you dwell on it, the bad news just gets worse.

All of which proves the cliche, Ignorance is Bliss. Unfortunately. ignorance on the part of human beings is what leads to most of our problems. Thanks to not paying attention, a whole lot of otherwise intelligent folks believe the Freedom Truck people are heroes.

Quite the opposite.

They want the mask mandates and isolating, and limited numbers allowed in public places to be lifted because they don’t work.

They don’t work?

How do we know that?

Well …we DON”T know for sure, because the convoy cowboys and their followers have not participated, meaning WE HAVE NO IDEA WHETHER THEY WORK OR NOT.

It would take EVERYONE following the mandates for a long enough period of time to see if they worked or not. And yes …easier said than done, but there are ways. The government would have to man up and suspend rent and mortgage payments for a couple of months, and make sure everyone had enough to live on, NONE of it a loan, but a GIFT. Governments bail out corporations and companies to the tune of trillions of dollars …why not bail out the people for a change?

At least, THEN we would know if the mandates work. We continue to be our own worst enemies.

One thing we do know, is that every time a politician says it’s safe to gather, this many here, that many there, go to the club, party, masks only whenever, we end up going right back to lockdown. Why? Because the politicians, etc, don’t know any more than we do …but THE ECONOMY!

No. PEOPLE first. ECONOMY second. As long as COVID and it’s merry Little Band of Variants is out there, we are at risk. Look at the numbers. Find the facts. We need to be patient  and work together.

Speaking of working together, I would love to see Paul, Peter, Roger and Ringo do the obvious.

I never saw MASH the movie or watched the TV series. I like comedy in my comedy. Like All in the Family’s episode about Edith getting raped, MASH was couched in death and dying, which are second only to a series about a bunch of sad-sack neurotic individuals, (or in the case of Larry David’s singular mope motivated idiot, the similar series that followed) whose comedy depended on us finding stupidity, greed, and bad decisions hilarious, not exactly my cup ‘o joe. I tuned in to the last episode of Seinfeld hoping the plane they were in would crash. Would have been a fitting end to the characters.

Where was I …oh yeah …

There are two movies that have been my favourite comedies since the first time I saw them. Dave Foley and David Steinberg’s brilliant “The Wrong Guy” which does run out of steam in the last reel, (justifiably, I was just as exhausted from laughter up till then, too …they must have been spent.),

But number One has always been a little film called “Serial”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_(1980_film)

Based on the book by Cyra McFadden, it is blessed with a wonderful story, an incredible cast, and everything else it takes to amuse me. It is still, after all these years, funny beyond belief.

Although not always in a good way, the dialogue, social behavior, and world-view concerns are even more prevalent today than they were 40 years ago. …for better or worse. It also helps that I was familiar with the area, and the lifestyle …not far from where I grew up and across the Golden Gate Bridge from where I was born.

Sally Kellerman plays one of the main characters. She is beyond brilliant in the role.

Much love for Martin Mull, Bill Macy, Peter Bonerz, Tommy Smothers, and my still crushable first crush, Tuesday Weld, and Sally …well …I only knew her name from having met her 5 years before the movie in a recording studio in New York.

I found myself in a roomy control room watching (and listening) to some vocals being done for an album being recorded by some friends in a group called Manhattan Transfer.

There were the  members of the group, Tim, Alan, Janis, and Laurel, Little Feat Keyboardist, Billy Payne, songwriteer Carole Bayer Sagar, a couple of others I can’t recall, and the producer, Richard Perry. Sally Kellerman and Richard were dating at the time. She was very nice, very sociable, and very pretty. The one thing that I will never forget …she needed 2 folding chairs instead of one to sit comfortably. Kardashian Class Superstructure looong before it became popular.

Tell you more about that session sometime if I remember to, but right now, I gotta make a couple of pictures, find a couple of others, think about dinner, and do some stuff around here.

Unless I lose my focus, get distracted, and end up doing something else entirely.

  1. Re “the cliche, Ignorance is Bliss. Unfortunately. ignorance on the part of human beings is what leads to most of our problems.”

    Yes, right!

Ignorance of the reality of lies and deceptions (=most mainstream news and establishment decrees) is bliss because exposing yourself to that is self-propagandization.

Ignorance of truths (especially if they’re upsetting) is not, or only temporarily or rarely, bliss because it is ultimately self-defeating.

The FALSE mantra of “ignorance is bliss”, promoted in the latter sense, is a product of a fake sick culture that has indoctrinated its “dumbed down” (therefore TRULY ignorant, therefore easy to control) people with many such manipulative slogans. You can find the proof that ignorance is never bliss (only superficial fake bliss), and how you get to buy into this lie (and other self-defeating lies), in the article “The 2 Married Pink Elephants In The Historical Room –The Holocaustal Covid-19 Coronavirus Madness: A Sociological Perspective & Historical Assessment Of The Covid “Phenomenon”” … https://www.rolf-hefti.com/covid-19-coronavirus.html

“Blissful” believers in “ignorance is bliss” — blissfully stupid people — are nearly always self-destructive indifferent immoral ignoramuses and/or members of herd stupidity… speaking of which, with the letters of “omicron” an alleged Covid variant you can spell “moronic”

And further speaking of stupid herd people not getting the glaringly obvious truth/ie not getting the constant onslaught of BIG lies of the official authorities……
