Peter Goes Back to Bed with Betty
Well, I am grateful to be back, thank you all for your comments and support. This week I am going to be writing about “gratitude” and being a nice person, inter alia.
To begin with, 19 years ago today, I was in the emergency department at St Michael’s hospital in Toronto. I had been gravely injured when I was hit by a car, and in fact, the angels in Emergency actually “brought me back” when I first arrived.
I spent 5 1/2 weeks in an induced coma , followed by roughly a month in hospital and rehab, before returning home to recover. It was a very difficult period in my life, I feared not being able to return to my job, as it was very complicated, and I was unsure whether I would ever be able to function properly in that high pressure situation.
Although it took me just over two years to return to work, I was able to do so, with a greater understanding of the pressures which someone could go through while attempting to deal with the burden of dealing with job loss. I can truly say that I then understood how important it was to provide the individual with the absolutely best support that I could give them.
The reason why I began to understand this was because there were a number of people who put their best effort into ensuring that the flow of money continued uninterrupted as I attempted to deal with my situation. I also had support with my physical and emotional health as I tried to handle this terrible situation.
I was so pleased to find that my fears were groundless, that I was, in fact, able to get back into doing my job and make a difference in people’s lives.
I still miss those days…..occasionally. Last week, I went out to the front room to unplug my phone. I looked at the clock, which read “5:05 A.M.”. Ten years earlier, I would have stepped into the shower and prepared to go to work.
Last week I turned and went back to bed with Betty.
See you soon

A confirmed Cat person, Peter dabbled with being a water boy, a paper boy and an altar boy before finally settling on a career with the Canadian federal government. Once, in his youth, he ate a Dutch oven full of mashed potatoes to win a 5 cent bet with his beloved sister Mary’s boyfriend. (Of course he was much younger and a nickel went a lot farther!))
He has retired to palatial “Chez Montreuil”, which he shares with his little buddy CoCo the Fashionable. He is blessed to have the beautiful Betty in his life. He is not only a plastic aircraft modeller, but a proud “rivet counter”. Military aviation and live music are among other interests of his, and he tries to get out to as many shows as he can. He will be here for your enlightenment whenever the stars align. Profile photo courtesy of Pat Blythe, caricature courtesy of Peter Mossman.
