Gary Pig Gold has EIGHT QUESTIONS for BIG BOY PETE

Posted in Interview, life, music, Opinion with tags , , , , , , on March 28, 2022 by segarini

Allow me to quote, word-for-most-accurate-indeed-word the shrinkwrapped stickerhype affixed to Mono-Tone Records’ The Cosmic Genius of Big Boy Pete 1965-1977, the very first of two (so far!) volumes of audio esoterica culled from the great man’s already voluminous discography:

Like an English Kim Fowley produced by Joe Meek or a one man Barrett era Pink Floyd, Big Boy Pete is the unsung hero of the sixties! This first ever vinyl compilation features his best 60s stuff on one side and seven unreleased gems from the 70s on the other – ranging from wild and fuzzy garage to psych pop and freaky country-rock!

What more could ever I hope to add to that?? So instead then, Let’s let the Big Boy speak for himself:

Pat Blythe – Today’s column is brought to you by……and music

Posted in Canadian Music, Interview, life, music, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 3, 2021 by segarini

That one just popped into my head as I’ve just finished posting this week’s podcast.  I’m now 36 podcasts in, 36 conversations, 36 artist voices, 1,100 downloads, 29 followers and over 3,000 “listens”. People from all over the world including Australia, Europe, UAE, South America, the U.S. and Canada have been tuning in.  The purpose was to check in with local artists. As a neophyte podcaster, I had no expectations. Ten downloads made me happy to know someone was listening. Even though I’m still small potatoes, it’s like the little engine that could….it keeps growing by leaps and bounds. Still a guppy in the ocean of podcasts; but folks ARE listening and the music is being shared.

Darrell Vickers – Graham Haley Part Two – Wood, Paper, Scissors

Posted in Interview, life, Opinion, Review, Television, Work with tags , , , , , , on July 27, 2021 by segarini

In the Cabbage-Patch-Doll-crazed year of 1982, Graham Haley was an unstoppable entrepreneurial force of nature. There wasn’t a world or medium this young, ambitious South African dynamo did not aspire to conquer and dominate. And so it seemed inevitable that he would one day turn his thirsty, dominating eye to the grand old stage. During his rare moments of respite from industrial shows, radio production and imploring the general public to consume Triscuit crackers both hot and cold, Graham’s unstoppable brain concluded that producing a comedy revue was where the real jack was at.

Segarini – The Birth of The BobCast

Posted in Canadian Music, Interview, life, music, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , on July 16, 2021 by segarini

It was the best of times, it was the worst of …no …wait …that’s either the opening line to a classic story or how I would feel if I won the Lottery and then had to sit through a Billie Eilish concert.

Let me start over.

“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight.”
(Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington D.C., August 28, 1963)

“From Dallas, Texas, the flash – apparently official – President Kennedy died at 1:00 p.m. Central standard time, 2 p.m. Eastern standard time, some thirty-eight minutes ago.”

(Walter Cronkite, CBS Television, November 22, 1963)

“Houston, this is Tranquility Base. The Eagle has landed.”

The Segarini Interview

Posted in Interview, life, music, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 19, 2021 by segarini

I don’t know if you remember me, but I used to write a column or two here back before Corona went from Beer to Pandemic, and I wasn’t nipple deep in depression and writer’s block.

It occurred to me that maybe I should stick my head out of my burrow and let you know I’m okay, but still not ready to write about my favourite subjects like Gardening, Farm Tools of History, The Humour of Carrot Top and Naked Twister. Not to mention my recent discovery of a television host who may be more annoying, desperate for your love, and as shrill as the ongoing King of Late Night Fake Laughs and Maudlin Fawning, Jimmy “Don’t Call Me Jimi” Fallon.

Anyhoo, to remind you of who I are and why I is, here’s a re-run of an interview done with the Fabulous Bill King, a treasured friend and as talented a man as you are likely to ever meet. Not only will it re-introduce me to you, but will allow me to also reassure you that given enough time, Mitch McConnell will eventually die.

GARY PIG GOLD and those SUNSHINE WALKERS

Posted in Interview, music, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 17, 2021 by segarini

Throughout that wild and wacky A.D. 2020, one disc seemed to somehow find itself repeatedly, and most happily so, upon the ol’ Pig Player. A disc which via a mere 21 tracks in under 69 minutes presents an ideal, not to mention idyllic picture of two musical careers which, cannily overlapping more often than not, displays all that was/is unfailingly, musically sound; all that’s, in actual fact, proper with Pop.

Pat Blythe – Sounds Like Toronto…..and music

There’s been much written about the vibrancy of Yonge Street, particularly beginning in the late 50s to its eventual winding down during the mid to late 80s. Clubs like the Brown Derby, The Colonial Tavern, Club Blue Note, Town Tavern, Le Coq d’Or, Steeles Tavern, Friars Tavern, Hawk’s Nest, The Zanzibar, Silver Rail…..graduating to The Gasworks, Piccadilly Tube, Nickelodeon, Hard Rock Cafe and many others. All gone, except the memories. The jazz and blues, the beginning of the Toronto Sound, rock, disco and punk invasions, the Yonge St. Mall…..

Pat Blythe – Momma can you hear me? …..and music

Here I am, Tuesday afternoon and I’m not sure what to write about. I usually have a thousand ideas racing through my brain leading up to today. But as I sit in my usual spot on the couch I’m drawing a blank!

Gary Pig Gold – VERA RAMONE and her POISONED HEART

Posted in Interview, music, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , , , on September 14, 2020 by segarini

Over-intellectualizing about a subject as pure and simple in its perfection as the Ramones sort of defeats their entire purpose, now doesn’t it? The proverbial “dancing about architecture,” as Steve Martin (by way of Frank Zappa) might well say.

Consequently, I’ve shied away from most books and studies concerning Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Co. that have appeared over the years. So when a copy of Vera Ramone King’s Poisoned Heart came my way, I cracked it open with a wee bit of trepidation, I do admit.
