The Replacements – “Color Me Obsessed”

One of the highlights for my inaugural year as the NXNE Film Festival was the discovery and screening of “Color Me Obsessed – A Film About The Replacements”.  The screening process for a film fest is very similar to the A&R process at a record company. You go through hundreds of submissions and hope to find a gem or two. I must say that the film process does takes a while longer as a lot of this suckers run 90+ minutes, and, being a martyr I watched every minute of them (rookie mistake). Much like music, most people who submit films have delusions of grandeur and absolutely no right screening most of their projects outside of their living rooms.

My initiation into the world of punk was going to be on a grand, Technicolor, scale. It was the summer of 1980 and the second wave of punk was now in full discordant swing. At Toronto’s City Hall there was a public awareness concert called Rock Against Radiation set for Nathan Phillips’ Square. And as part of my initiation, my new band Swindle was going to attend collectively so that I could be shown the street etiquette and absorb the punk ethos.

Segarini: Why Is There So Much Crap?

It is everywhere. In the Government (both Federal and Local) in the corporations, the banks, on Wall Street, in medicine, food and drink, the music business, radio, television, movies, and the internet. No matter where you look, there is a Festival of Crap evident in every facet of our daily existence. We are inundated with shoddy this and tacky that, ill-advised laws, rules, and regulations, planned obsolescence and dumbed down entertainment. So why is there so much crap out there? The short answer? Because we love it.
