A new decade! A new year! Purging, changing, modifying, exploring, new beginnings and some endings, recounting and remembering, wondering, searching, discovering, assessing…..all these and more as a new decade begins.

Today’s missive and prime focus is Unison and the musical community they support. We begin with Unison’s background. Then it’s on to the fabulous fundraising bash Monday night (I’m still attempting to open the other eye). Find out who Jaymz Bee is (it was his birthday party), the instigator of Monday night’s festivities and of course, the musicians themselves and their music.

Some of the best Canadian talent appeared in support of this wonderful cause and to celebrate a birthday. But before I launch into any of that, I would like you to take a few minutes and listen to the following video.

A weekend (and a year) of celebrations across Canada….150 years young…..but is it really?

Oh how I love history! An item on my “to do” list before I pop my clogs is to work towards, and obtain, my BA Mediaeval History. Cambridge University is where I’d love to be (I do love England) but University of St. Michaels College here in Toronto is also an excellent choice and know for their studies in Mediaval history. The bucket list is not long, just really big projects.

I’m going to start calling this column Pat’s Diary (nope, too blah), or maybe Zippy’s Musical Journey, or maybe….My Life As A Crazy Lady…..  Welcome to my world of music, pictures, and general mayhem. So we begin another 10 days of zipping (get it haha) around this wonderful city of ours enjoying the nightlife. I’m starting backwards…..

Well, another week has just blown by and we are already half way through May. Where the hell is spring? I do believe Mother Nature has taken a detour. However, the beginning of “festival” season, music in particular, has started with a bang. CMW is the lead-in with the SING! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival running parallel and beyond. A bucket load of music is on tap this summer and folks are going to be hard-pressed to know which way to turn. So much to choose from and it will be happening all over the city, clear out to Hamilton and back. I’m not even including all the long weekend jams that happen in parks hither, thither and yon. Pick a few favourites, either local or long distance and settle in for the ride.

Doug Thompson headshotI really started interviewing musicians and other celebrities in earnest in the mid 1970’s.  Several friends of mine had a company called Footprint Productions, one of Canada’s first independent syndication companies.  In the summer of 1976, Footprint’s co-founders Dan Plouffe and John Hanlon were working on a multi-hour program called “Welcome Back”.  The premise was back to school stories from celebrities plus comedy skits with plenty of 70’s hits.
