Yessir, that last tour was sure a sumbitch, wasn’t it? “Winter Dance Party” my lone starred ass! More like a near month hauling all across those snow-crusted heartlands in the back of a school bus, sleeping with our guitars and our bottles of Jack and our rolling crap games. And precious little else, believe you me! But I suppose if they’d paid us what they were supposed to, we may have started flying between gigs instead …and that might’ve been even worse.

This week marked two important memorial milestones in Rock and Roll History. It was 51 years ago on February 9th that the Beatles walked into the homes of America –and the world – via ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’. The other was the 56th anniversary of the Day the Music Died – with Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper perishing in a plane crash on February 3, 1959 [in a sad coincidence, Holly’s bassist in The Crickets, Joe B. Mauldin passed away on February 7th this year]. I’m of the generation that neither event was contemporaneous to me. I can only measure their importance by the impact crater they left on pop culture…and music specifically.

While good ol’ Joe B.’s transition was, most thankfully, much more tranquil than that of his former mentor’s, I think it high time indeed to once again take pause, take stock, and reflect upon, tragic events notwithstanding,

Anyone familiar with that Pink Floyd tune? (c’mon, who isn’t? It’s from “Dark Side of The Moon” for crying out loud). The album, released on March 1, 1973, made # 1 for only one week, but in total, spent 741 weeks on Billboard magazine’s album chart. Let’s put that into years shall we? “Dark Side of the Moon” remained on the charts from 1973 until 1988. If you know the song, then you’ll know that the next lyrics to the title at the top of the page are: “Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash. New car, caviar, four star daydream, think I’ll buy me a football team.”

This week Paul Revere of 1960s pop band Paul Revere & The Raiders passed away at the age of 76. He and his band were one of the second generation of pop stars who took the post-Elvis world by storm on the back of Beatlemania.

Anyone who knows their movie history, knows that rant comes from Peter Finch’s newscaster/commentator character Howard Beale in the movie “Network”. Credit where credit is due. Those words actually were written by the author of “Network”, Paddy Chayefsky. Where am I going with this you may well ask? Well, see I LOVE A GOOD RANT! And that “Network” rant is one of the very best. There are plenty more out there. Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly trying to record a quick promo and not having the time…or Orson Welles losing his patience with a British director on a series of TV voice overs.

The first time I think I even thought about death was when Hank Williams died back in 1952. New Year’s Eve it was, but I only remember the headlines. I was five years old and Hank was a regular part of my day. Dad, the curator of the famous Gutch record collection, had only a few records at that time and Never Again (Will I Knock On Your Door) was one of them. I loved that song so much that I begged and begged Dad to play it every time he headed toward the record player and, usually, he obliged. I remember Dad humming along in a grunting kind of way, almost as if the music was going to bust out of him at any moment, but it seldom did. Dad was a lot like myself in that when the music was playing, singing along seemed a lack of respect.

I had every intention of starting up the long and windy story about the band I was in following my stint with Swindled in the early 1980s as a teenage punk rocker. Moving Targetz lasted 9 years, released two albums and five EPs, and robbed 50+ musicians of their will to live. It’s going to take the better part of this year to tell the tale. The story will have to wait.
This week a musical associate, whom I’ve known casually for about a decade, passed away after a seemingly abbreviated battle with cancer. His name was Rick Gunn.
