Happy June everyone! Get the coffee, advil, milk thistle and Gatorade ready, it’s music festival time in Toronto! This week brings North by North East back into our lives. That means 4am last calls, copious amounts of alcohol and terrible for you meals, and glorious, glorious live music everywhere you go! It’s become one of my favourite times of year in this city, along with CMW (despite the pitfalls I complained about back in April) and Indie Week. The city floods with visiting musicians and delegates from across Canada, the U.S. and the rest of the world. Ever concert, event or just bar wandering can turn into a network opportunity, a reunion or just a chance to get sh-tfaced with friends, new and old alike. It’s a great time to be in Toronto, and it’s a great time to be a music lover.

In a nutshell, I resolved to be positive, open, and hardworking and as a result life will be full of opportunities; great ones. I firmly believe that every one of us is in charge of our own destinies. A friend once told me that “When you wake up, you decide if you’re going to be happy today”. But some days just start shitty and stay that way, and no matter how hard you try you can’t see that silver lining. So on days like that you just trudge along, not even thinking that something will come along and make it better. That is, until you check your email and see that you’ve just been approved to cover The Darkness that very night.
Nadia Elkharadly: 2012 – A year of musical discovery

While it may be cliché, it’s true – 2012 has flown by! And with the passing of another year comes a time to reminisce about musical discoveries past, and this year there were many. This isn’t a standard “Best of the year” list. I’m not sticking to just bands or live shows; there is so much more to music, and specifically to LOVING music than that. So in no particular order here are some of my most memorable musical discoveries of 2012.
