Have you ever bought a car, and suddenly noticed that nearly every car you see is the same colour and style? Or, if you are pregnant, have you been surprised to see that it seems that everybody else is pregnant as well?

Roxanne Tellier – Time Enough at Last

When it comes to excuses, I’ve got a million of ‘em. Even now, as I should be writing this column, I am thinking of two dozen other things that I should be doing first – like alphabetizing the vitamins in the bathroom cabinet or swinging up to the grocery store for some spices that I won’t need until Halloween.

I continue to be in perpetual awe of human technology if for no other reason than it’s the dividing line between us and the rest of the animal kingdom except maybe cats who have been secretly running the planet for nearly 5,000 years without so much as giving us a heads up. Opposable thumbs have led us to more than just cracking coconuts open and banging rocks together in hopes of getting a record deal. Our search for knowledge fuels our desire to create better tools to obtain that knowledge faster so that we might then have more time to waste using time-wasting tools. It’s a perpetual cycle.

Today I am going to write about cats, or rather, a cat. Not the musical, mind you, or even the upcoming movie.

Nope, I am going to write about the actual quadrupeds, or as some people call them, ” our feline overlords “. Today I am going to relate some of the background of my little buddy Reg’s mother Jane A later column will feature CoCo, who is the current official cat of Chez Montreuil.

The cats and I love spring and summer .. and even some of fall.  Winter is too snowy and cold, and we’re not too keen on rain; cold rain is particularly nasty.

But having so much lovely, balmy sunshine to enjoy in the warmer months … ahhh! that’s the best! By 6:30 a.m. most mornings, Lord Farlsworth, Lady Jade, and I are on the front porch, where I sip a coffee, and they survey their kingdom.

We’re deep into it now, we Canadians, the meat and potatoes of winter. There’s snow everywhere, the winds are howling, and you risk frostbite every time you peep outside the door to see if the stalactites hanging from the eaves have killed the postman yet. Or if the sidewalk ice got to him first.

Roxanne“The Internet is a lot like ancient Egypt: people writing on walls and worshipping cats.” Cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, horses, hedgehogs … you name it. The supply of animal pictures seems to be limitless. And nothing can draw an “awww” out of even the most hardened grouch’s mouth quicker than the sight of a tiny, helpless, pink-mouthed baby anything. We are helpless before their innocent charms.
