As Glenn Frey once said, “The Heat Is On.” We’re in fake spring right now and the dog turd landmines have begun to thaw while kiddies on bicycles and joggers are out in full force. I expect that some are listening to music while fitting their bits. Below is a whole new batch of Canadiana filling earbuds and smart speakers everywhere.

A PIRATE’S TALE – Gary Pig Gold on launching his Favourite Conspiracy

As hard as it may be for us to recall all these decades later, the extremely late Eighties somehow found Dave “Rave” DesRoches touring his home and native land alongside ol’ highschool buds Teenage Head, extolling the second-hand virtues of carpet kissin’ Hawaiian beer-drinking parties… as the remainder of the music biz moved uncaringly along to George Michael, Guns N’ Roses n’ other such comparative pleasures. However – and this is a big, all-important However however – Dave had spent most every down-hour he could during those distant days squirreled away within the nearest quiet zone, creating a veritable treasure trove of words and music which, while wholly incompatible with his Teenage night job would serve him more than well when, as 1988 became 89, he began seriously considering stepping out upon his very own.

Jaimie Vernon_Viletones As you read this the UK has decided to cut ties with their trading partners in the European Union and make a go of it on their own. The response in the financial markets was swift especially where currency power was concerned and the British Pound plummeted 8% overnight. On the upside it now allows the rest of us to buy more MacIntosh Toffee and import vinyl. It might also bode well for the UK travel industry in the short term.

Jaimie Vernon_Viletones Long before I considered myself a profession record label weasel I worked in a government bunker as a data librarian. My job title was Records Management Assistant and my duties included archiving government documents, maps, tax records and all matter of ephemera – including name tags from VIPs who visited City Hall and ribbon cutting scissors from shopping mall openings attended by our politicians.

24 hours ago a crowdfunding campaign to bring my old record label, Bullseye, back from the dead ended successfully with over $20,000 in donations from people who passionately believe in not only me and the label but music in general. I’m overwhelmed by the generosity and well wishes. I am truly humbled.

Vernon_WeddingBassA major anniversary passed surreptitiously on April 20th. It was the 29th anniversary of my long-suffering record label Bullseye Records. Normally I’d have shouted from the rooftops and run some kind of anniversary commemoration on Facebook or with musicians I know or privately, silently weeping, into my morning orange juice. But, I actually forgot about it.

So far removed am I from the music world now, and my own legacy, and exhausted from the grind that is my paycheck shackles that it slipped under my radar.
