Every week we seem to be losing more and more of our show business icons.  Lesley Gore passed awhile back.  She was my first teenage crush.  I mentioned that to her the first time I interviewed her.  She let me down gently.

Segarini – Denny Tedesco and the Story of The Wrecking Crew Movie

Bob 2015 2

I have amazing friends.

Without them, I would be eating cardboard by the middle of the month, getting drunk by mixing Windex with Tang, or chugging bottles of Listerine, and enjoying snow on a 17 inch B&W TV while I licked pictures of popcorn.

It was one of these friends who made it possible for me to endure stepping out into what I can only describe as a Montreal Winter in the normally mild confines of Toronto, not once, but twice, last week.

Why?

Because he secured invites to a party for and tickets to a screening of a documentary about a time and place and group of people that has been 20 years in the making…and invited me along.

My last blog on January 26th on “The Wrecking Crew” documentary went through the roof in terms of readership, so Boss Segarini tells me.  I think that’s mainly because Denny Tedesco, the Director of the documentary about the session musicians of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, re-posted it to his list of contacts.

You know!  Like Kafka’s cockroach!  I think it was always there but I was too close to see it.  I should have known it, though.  As a child, I loved maple syrup!  Of all my dad’s records, my favorites were by Hank Snow and Montana Slim!  (I thought Slim was from Montana— can I sue for misinformation?)  My favorite train ads besides those of the Great Northern were those of the TransCanada Railway!  For the last few years, I have use “eh?” as a punctuation mark.  Canada was the home of my dad’s favorite whiskys:  Corby’s Park Lane and Crown Royal.

So, what project in your life has taken you the longest to complete?  Has anything you’ve really wanted to do ever taken you 18 years?  Most likely not, but that’s how long it took director Denny Tedesco to complete his documentary on a small group of musicians in Los Angeles who, from the late 1950’s through to the 1970’s, supplied the rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion, saxophone) for hundreds, if not thousands of hit records.

Hard to miss that’s it’s the Christmas season.  Department, drug and clothing stores have all been playing Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”, Bobby Helm’s “Jingle Bell Rock”, Wham’s “Last Christmas” and The Beach Boys “Little Saint Nick”, along with newer Christmas ditties from the likes of Neil Diamond, Taylor Swift, Michael Buble and the omnipresent “White Christmas” from der Bingle (aka Bing Crosby) for what seems like months already.

This column is the first of what hopefully, will become more of a regular one on DBAWIS by yours truly.  My intention (and we all know what happens to intentions, especially good ones) is to take a closer look at some of the hit records and hit makers from the rock era using some of my interview archives.

Doug Thompson: “THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED”

The recent passing of Paul Revere of Paul Revere and Raiders is another in an extremely long line of musical celebrity deaths.  There have been much bigger names who died in the past few months – Joan Rivers and Robin Williams deaths reverberated around the globe – probably because they both brought so much laughter to the world.  I’m in the first wave of Baby Boomers, so Lauren Bacall’s death, though sad, didn’t resonate as much personally.  James Garner’s passing did.  I used to watch him faithfully every week on “Maverick” when I was growing up and later “The Rockford Files” was must-see TV for me.

But there are three deaths that occurred during the past couple of months that touched me in a way I hadn’t expected.

Anyone who knows their movie history, knows that rant comes from Peter Finch’s newscaster/commentator character Howard Beale in the movie “Network”.  Credit where credit is due.  Those words actually were written by the author of “Network”, Paddy Chayefsky.  Where am I going with this you may well ask?  Well, see I LOVE A GOOD RANT!  And that “Network” rant is one of the very best.  There are plenty more out there.  Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly trying to record a quick promo and not having the time…or Orson Welles losing his patience with a British director on a series of TV voice overs.

Doug Thompson: THE FLIP SIDE! THE STRANGEST VINYL ALBUM COVERS!

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , on June 2, 2014 by segarini

Doug Thompson headshotLast month, we discussed classic album covers.  This time, we’re on the flip side – some of the strangest album covers.  I imagine that you all have your own favourite for ‘Strangest Album Cover of All Time.  There were so many to choose from.  I know most of you who know me won’t find it hard to believe that I actually have a couple of these albums in my own record archives.  I’m not telling which ones.
