I was overwhelmed with what CMW had to offer. So much to see and do, so many contacts to make, so much to learn and waaaay too many clubs to hit. Impossible in ten days but we all do our very best.

Thanks to the good people at AudioBlood, Bob Segarini, Pat Blythe and myself have spent the last ten days mixing and mingling with musicians, artists, and the people who love them. It’s been simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating. I won’t lie  … my feet hurt, I’ve got a desk covered in CDs, business cards, and promotional bumpf of all stripes … and I’m relieved that I don’t have to do anything more strenuous than type this recap of the festivities. Although there are a few more events tonight …

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Have Guitar Will Travel

CamThere’s a lot going on right now and these posts are going to be pretty short and sweet over the course of the next month. What’s up you ask? I am trying to finish the book “A Man Called Destruction – The Life & Music of Alex Chilton” in which our esteemed colleague Mr. Frank Gutch Jr. is quoted, the NXNE Film Festival kicks off at The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema next Friday night, NXNE Music, Art, Comedy and Interactive then run until June 22nd and, the world’s biggest sporting event, The World Cup, kicks off in Brazil next week. Though I fear we have little hope “C’mon England”.

Nadia LogoIf there’s one thing I’ve learned at this whole music journalism thing, it’s that us journalist types LOVE our free liquor.  That’s right.  My name is Nadia, and I’m a Free-Alcoholic.  And I’m not ashamed to say it.

Shanghai Aug 2012

This column is dedicated with love to my friend Jay Smith – The Rock Ranger. RIP my friend.

How do you begin to describe a Canadian Music Week that started with a brisk walk through a blizzard for a Tuesday afternoon acoustic performance from The Box Tiger and ended early Sunday morning with The Dirty Nil channeling Fugazi? Thoughts of David Byrne singing “You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?” come to mind.

Shanghai Aug 2012For many it has already started with the East Coast Music Awards or the annual SXSW conference in Austin. It is convention season as Canadian Music Week is followed by The Hot Docs Conference and then the NXNE Music + Film + Comedy + Art + Interactive. Old friends, new friends, many late nights and far too many early mornings. As we speak we are on day two or three of CMW and there are three more days beckoning as well as 4 AM closing times.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – That’s A Wrap

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 20, 2012 by segarini

Shanghai Aug 2012I never get sick. That being said I am sitting here sucking back chicken noodle soup and trying to fight off a flu which is usually far too nervous to invade my body. I shouldn’t have gone out on Monday as it started to set in but I had to drop by the NXNE Christmas party, stop by The Rivoli to wish my friend Todd Pinnell the best of luck of his new adventures as he said goodbye to his beloved club, pop into The Horseshoe to check out Sid Johnson and then head to the Bovine for their annual X-Mess Party.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock – W

Was (Not Was)

There might not be a more eclectic album in my collection than 1983’s “Born To Laugh At Tornadoes” by Detroit’s Was (Not Was). I mean tell me another record that has a list of guest vocalists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Mel Torme, Mitch Ryder, Doug Fieger (The Knack), Marshall Crenshaw and Sweet Pea Atkinson? Throw in some guitars by the likes of Vinnie Vincent (Kiss) and you have a stew of rock, pop, funk and torch songs. Although they had their biggest hit with “Walk The Dinosaur” in 1988 this is the record that defines David Weiss (Don Was) and Donald Fagenson (David Was).

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock – T

Next week I will return to the T’s but right now I have a few…..

Thoughts

Seems to be a theme with most of those this week. I wrote this on Monday morning.

I couldn’t let this week go by without a few thoughts about both Whitney and the Grammy awards.
