Every week I sit down to write this column never knowing what the keyboard will produce. My fingers seem to have a mind of their own. I have a list that I don’t seem to follow. Bits and pieces of paper with notes scribbled on them scattered all over the house. Something exciting, new, interesting or completely distracting seems to pop up and my focus is once again altered and my direction changes (squirrel!). FB is providing some fuel to this fire. Here are a few items that caught my attention.

It’s been simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating. I won’t lie … my feet hurt, I’ve got a desk covered in CDs, business cards, and promotional bumpf of all stripes … and I’m relieved that I don’t have to do anything more strenuous than type this recap of the festivities. Although there are a few more events tonight …

It is convention season as Canadian Music Week is followed by The Hot Docs Conference and then the NXNE Music + Film + Comedy + Art + Interactive. Old friends, new friends, many late nights and far too many early mornings. As we speak we are on day two or three of CMW and there are three more days beckoning as well as 4 AM closing times.

Punctuation and grammar appear as they did in print. Many of you read Justin Smallbridge’s first DBAWIS column last week but the three of us go back a long way.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – 67 Young Street

I now love a lot of his music but it took me a while to get on board the Lionel train (he collects them). I’m pretty sure this was due to my sister. Kelly is two years older than me which now makes us close, but, during our teenage years that gap seemed enormous. Our musical tastes could not have been more different. We moved a lot as kids but always seemed to have bedrooms right next door to each other. We had stereo wars and music wars. We both continually upgraded our stereos as our record collections grew.
Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock – Still Undercover
Posted in Opinion with tags Ace Frehley, Beatles, Cameron Carpenter, Covers, DBAWIS, Don't Believe a Word I Say, Jay Sparrow, Kiss, music, Nazareth, Records, Shanghai Cowgirl on October 4, 2012 by segariniGreat column by Frank Gutch Jr. yesterday. I had the pleasure of doing publicity for the 2009 release of “Lighthouse 40 Years Of Sunny Days”. The CD contained their 16 greatest hits re-mastered and the accompanying DVD was the current band in the studio recreating those hits in 5.1 sound. A great starter kit for anyone who wants to get to know the music of Lighthouse. Astute reader Bill Curran pointed out that “Sorrow” from the Bowie album “Pin Ups” was originally recorded by The McCoys of early Rick Derringer fame. Who knew?
