I’m not a blues guy, really. The closest I come to the real blues is B.B. King, maybe— electric guitar a must. I listened to a little Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee during my college years and there was always John Mayall, who seemed to have the best of the up-and-comers in his band no matter what period. I accepted Cream as blues on certain songs, which probably tells you more about my non-blues background than anything. Loved The Blues Project and Paul Butterfield. Didn’t like Delta Blues. Stevie Ray Vaughn is pretty much the best blues I have heard. That should give you an idea of where I am coming from and where I am going because I am going to review some blues albums I enjoyed this year and tell you why. They will be short and a couple even have stories behind them.

The world doesn’t always go my way and sometimes I get so pissed about that that I have to vent. GodDAMN if the world isn’t going the way of idiots and psychopaths as the Trump Generation attempts to destroy everything good, but I will be damned if I will let it happen to my music. That’s right. My music! Sure, you have your music— The Beatles and Floyd and Queen and even Beyonce and Kanye and whoever the hell else. YOU don’t have to worry. YOU can find that music and plenty of people who still love that music just walking down the street. Me, I have to work for it. I have to scrounge and search and listen and question at every turn. You think that’s easy?

One down, two to go… Angharad Drake, as far as I know (I mean, I wasn’t there, Nanaimo being a lo-o-ong walk from Oregon), finished her one gig on Vancouver Island and is set to play two more in Vancouver before leaving for her homeland, Australia. Those will happen (barring God and Act of Congress— and we have seen how Congress has been acting lately) on Friday and Saturday, June 23^rd and 24^th. On Friday, she will play Trees Organic Coffee and Roasting House and on Saturday, The Heatley. Here is a sample for your listening enjoyment.

After ending this last year cranking out two long columns about musicians we lost, I feel the need to counterbalance. While I know that death is a part of life (indeed, life = death according to the laws of nature), it was not all that much fun to dig through the past year searching for musicians recently passed. It was, in fact, a bit of a downer. Reliving the news that I knew was not half as bad as discovering the news I had missed. All too many musicians I admire tripped off this mortal coil without so much as a thank you, Frank, it’s been fun, and I was more than a little unsettled with each discovery. But the past is the past, whether we like it or not, and it was not all bad.
