We’re into March and the weather continues to be as unpredictable as NHL hockey.  Live music is still down the road and hopefully will see some growth when the weather gets better. Until then we have to satisfy ourselves with live streaming and new music releases from Canada’s greatest undiscovered and perpetual talents.

Heads up folks, DBAWIS will be going on summer hiatus beginning next week until September 7. So after today (Wednesday) I won’t be landing in your inbox or appearing on my FB timeline again until September 11. Hmmmmm…..come to think of it, I may resurrect a few oldies but goodies on my timeline, just to keep you on your toes.  So with that, let this post begin….

Editor’s Note – Originally posted on January 21st 2015, this column bears repeating. Proud to say our track record is pretty good for sniffing out greatness in a sea of popular, financially successful mediocrity, but the continued confusion regarding the differences in worthiness and rose-coloured glasses steeped in nostalgia,  needs to be addressed. When it comes to Greatness, consider the majority of what you hear on terrestrial radio as nothing more than Alternative Fact.

Cameron Carpenter – 10 CC – That’s The Ticket

It was 42 years ago next Wednesday when I saw The New York Dolls and Kiss perform at Massey Hall. It was one of my earliest concert going experiences and I still remember the combination of fear and excitement racing through my body.

In 1989 the late Joe Strummer released a great solo record by the name of “Earthquake Weather”.  It seems as if we are right in the middle of it right now. Depending on your age and musical taste there recently have been a series of major quakes and after-shocks which are shaking the world of music to its very core. Last week was no exception.

If this seems a little bit dated it is because it went missing in cyberspace last week sometime on Tuesday.

I can tell you now that Cobra Ramone rocked, Bellwoods played a great show at The Rivoli and 54.40 did a fine job in The Beach last Saturday night.

(Editor’s Note – This column was originally meant to run last week. It somehow ended up in my SPAM folder and was hidden from sight until Cam sent it to me again with the update above. Here’s the column that was originally slated to be published a week ago today.)

Everything comes from somewhere. If you don’t build on what has gone before, you are creating something without the benefit of a rock solid foundation to grow from.

Trying to recreate the past is a mistake made often by people who are more invested in the times represented by the music than the music itself, and using their love and knowledge of that music in the creation of something new.

In the case of music, sounding like The Beatles won’t bring back the 60s…but learning from their music and the influences that inspired them can help create the future.

Frank Gutch Jr: Bobby Singh— Photo-Chronicling Toronto’s Music Scene; Shari Ulrich & Julia Graff— It’s a Family Thing; A Trifecta of Concept Albums; and Notes…..

FrankJr2Shari Ulrich, in her latest blog, talks about the future from a perspective of the past, her point being that she had not even an inkling of what was to happen while it was even happening.  To live in the present is, in essence, to live in the future because time has no on and off buttons.  Every second we live is another second into the future and another second away from the past.  We experience it on an ongoing basis, the seconds ticking away into minutes and then hours and then days and then weeks until we are at a point we stop (though it never really stops) and look back, wiping our brows and wondering, where did it all go?  And wish that we had maybe paid more attention.

Nadia Elkharadly: The Junos

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 5, 2014 by segarini

NadiaHappy February DBAWIS!  It’s been a great start to 2014 so far, aside from a few blips here and there.  More than anything it’s shaping up to be an exciting year for music, but new and familiar, and you know how excited music gets me.

For those of you not in Canada, not into music or just not on twitter, the 2014 Juno Award nominations were announced this week.  That’s Grammy in Canadian for all of you unfamiliar with the national canuck music awards.  And like with any award show, with nominations come controversy, and this year’s Juno picks were not without their fair share.  Take a gander at the nominee list here, while I will mosey on down the page to ruminate on a particularly contentious nomination.
