It should be no secret by now that when it comes to music I am drawn to the non-hits, the non-charters, and the obscure. Some of the most beloved music of my past have consisted of artists and songs only the most avant of the garde have treasured— the Little John & The Monks and the Cargoes and, until their fairly recent deification, the Big Stars. It started innocently enough— the placement of Jimmy Bowen‘s By the Light of the Silv’ry Moon on radio station KEX‘s Barney Keep‘s playlist, but it was enough.

I have been so overwhelmed with videos and new releases this week that I’ve decided to hit you all with nothing but Notes. Videos you might want to see, news (mostly about new releases), and thoughts. I am taking a week to get away by myself to hopefully get caught up. Tons of reviews to write and notes to arrange. I will be back on track next week. In the meantime, if you don’t have the time to look this over now, save the link and do it when you have a few seconds. No sense in forcing it now when you could actually enjoy it at a later time. There are some cool things here. I know. I screened them myself.

The Rolling Stones announced the first of several gigs marking their 50th anniversary together (at $2,000 a seat for prime viewing at the London “O”). Rush, now celebrating their 40th in its current incarnation, was nominated for a chance to become a tourist attraction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Oh, and Chuck Berry – the undisputed Father of Rock and Roll turned….86.
JAIMIE VERNON – THANK GOD I’M NOT A COUNTRY BOY

Some of my devoted readers are not going to like it. It’s related to my disdain for certain genres of music so if you’ve got a strong constitutional defense for the music you love you may want to read the ‘New Yorker’ in your smoking jacket instead. Or track down re-re-re-runs of the Grand Ol’ Opry on TVland. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool music snob. I have no patience or interest in Jazz, The Blues or Country music. I can hear the outraged cries of “whaaaaaaa???” as I write this. I don’t want to hear it (your protestations or the music). You know those sales guys that call your house trying to sell you what you don’t need? You can’t sell me on any of these genres….I have zero need for them in my life. Continue reading
