Pat Blythe – The Women of Rock Redux Part 4 – The Queen of Rock……and music

During the Rock era, there were many women who attempted to build a life in the music business. Few actually survived. Those who did…..faith, determination and a boatload of talent got them through. They were not without their struggles, putdowns and letdowns (both personal and professional). With international sold out performances and millions of albums sold worldwide, these ladies who did survive were front and centre….unforgettable, never taking no for an answer, believing in themselves and not putting up with the shit. If they didn’t tell you how they felt to your face, they told you through their music and performances.

Even though these “Women of Rock” columns are part of a former series, further updates and research have expanded them. I’m not much for leaving stones unturned. Next week, Ann and Nancy Wilson get their update and their column. This week, may I present the undisputed Queen of Rock….a force to be reckoned with!

Posted in life, Opinion, Review with tags , , , , , , , , , on December 6, 2019 by segarini

These are the stories

The Untold Stories of Rock.

The stories they dare not share, dare not print, dare not tell

These are the legendary stories of the legendary music and the legendary stars of the legendary decades, the legendary 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, when legendary music and artists did legendary things, and legendary stories were told and became legendary. …but not THESE stories! These stories are not legendary yet. These stories are still to be told …because right now …right this moment …these stories are about to become legendary because they will no longer be UNTOLD STORIES OF ROCK! They will henceforth become TOLD STORIES OF ROCK! And that means these stories are about to be LEGENDARY!

Gadzooks!

According to the first hour and forty-eight minutes of Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger’s poison pen letter to the radio, record, and music industries, people like myself and others who failed to hit the Big Time should thank our lucky stars.

I haven’t seen this many rich, miserable, self absorbed people in one place since the last time I watched Dynasty…and if you are too young to remember Dynasty, well…there’s always Empire, and like Greg Godovitz told me last night when he called me after the final curtain, “It’s Empire for Honkies!” True dat….

Doug Thompson headshotRolling Stone Magazine recently released their latest ‘list’, “The 100 Greatest Songwriters” rollingstone.com).  Let me repeat that title, “The 100 Greatest Songwriters”.  Their descriptive line states “From Brill Building tunesmiths to Punk poets, from Woody Guthrie to Max Martin, the visionaries who defined music history.”

March 2 was the 10th anniversary of Hunter S. Thompson’s death and a picture of one of his quotes was making the rounds in Facebook. I found the subject matter rather timely! Many of us will find both the truth and the irony in what he had to say.

Yeah, yeah, it’s been a week since the Saturday Night Live (SNL) special, and Bob’s given his views on the pros and cons. But I’m still thinking about what the show meant to me, in its heyday, and occasionally, since.

Doug Thompson headshotI love album covers!  Not the shrunken down versions they use on CDs, I mean those gloriously creative (mostly) 12” vinyl record album covers.  I was looking through my vinyl record collection the other day and marvelled at some of the amazing designs of some of the covers.  Now, before we start delving into some classic album covers as well as a few personal favourites, a little history is in order, but don’t panic – there will not be a quiz later.

Gary Pig Gold Rolls Over The Stones

GaryInEdithGroveWell before all the 49th (or is it 51st?) Anniversary doom ‘n’ gloom of bloated coffee table retrospectives and HBO documentaries – not to mention thousand-dollar-plus “reunion” ticket prices – there was quite simply, quite pimply, just a promising little mock-blues band from the wrong side of London, stealing empties to pay for the gas heater and cherishing all the Bo Diddley B-sides they could find, steal, and/or cover whenever Alexis Korner allowed them to sit in for a song or two.
