Another piece from 2015. I loved writing these series and my research quests have only increased over time. I’ve also rearranged things a bit but kept the same general format the original column was in. Six years later there are more names to add. Originally a five-part series, I may just add one or two more “parts” to it down the road. So in all its 2015 glory, I present to you some of the women who rock.

This seems to be my mantra these days….busy, busy, busy….and I’m loving it. Two nights in a row at Cherry Cola’s introduced me to a few new Indie bands while allowing me the pleasure of hearing a few of my favourites. Something tells me “Indie Week” has already started….at least in this column.

When last I spoke of my day job I was driving automobiles for a subcontractor to one of Canada’s only two railroads. It wasn’t CN. The job nearly killed me. It was so labour intensive and the hours were so long that I actually don’t remember getting to or from work some days.

Not the shrunken down versions they use on CDs, I mean those gloriously creative (mostly) 12” vinyl record album covers. I was looking through my vinyl record collection the other day and marvelled at some of the amazing designs of some of the covers. Now, before we start delving into some classic album covers as well as a few personal favourites, a little history is in order, but don’t panic – there will not be a quiz later.
Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – G is for Going In/Going To Wait

Nominations are out for the class of 2014, and, for a couple of days, everyone is talking rock’n’roll. Speaking of which why the hell isn’t it called the “Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame”? Maybe that explains a lot. Until December 5th you can vote online for your five faves, and the public vote will be used (in a very, very small way) towards the final count.
Nadia Elkharadly: Kids these days – A guest rant
Posted in Opinion with tags Addicted, Band Merch, DBAWIS, Don't Believe a Word I Say, Emy Stantcheva, music, Nadia Elkharadly, Nirvana, Records, Rock T-Shirts, soundgarden, Toronto on August 28, 2013 by segariniI’m lucky to have several super cool and like-minded people in my life, and as a result I have some fairly intellectually stimulating conversations on an equally fairly regular basis. Sometimes these conversations can devolve (entertainingly so!) into some pretty epic rants. One such instance happened quite recently. I was talking to my dear friend Emy on Gchat while we were both taking brain breaks from work (hey, it’s necessary sometimes…a lot of the time), and the topic of band tshirts came up. Both of us, being music lovers to the nth degree, have our share of band related tanks, tshirts and even dresses that claim places in our respective wardrobes. One important fact to note is that the band outfits we own are inspired by bands that we actually *gasp* LIKE!
Nadia Elkharadly: Bands I wish I could see live
Posted in Opinion with tags Alice in Chains, Bands, Concerts, DBAWIS, Don't Believe a Word I Say, Jerry Cantrell, Joan Jett, Layne Staley, Live, Mike Starr, music, Nadia Elkharadly, Nirvana, Sandy West, the Headstones, The Runaways, Toronto on July 11, 2013 by segariniI definitely go to more concerts than the average person. Some are small scale, like 25 people in a tiny bar. Others are huge, like selling out huge sports arena huge. Sometimes it starts to wear a little thin, the constant going out to different venues night after night, seeing band after band. Don’t get me wrong, I still, and will always, love live music. But as I mentioned in my last column, the excitement waxes and wanes when it comes to all the shows I go to. But sometimes a special show comes along that really rekindles my passion for live music. One of those such shows happened just the other day.
