Paris, despite a relentless onslaught of techno-goblins, was glorious. My friend Mary, who happened to be in Paris when I was, told me yesterday that Mercury has been sitting square in retrograde for the last few days (Mercury being the god of communication, retrograde being the definition of “No way, Jose.”). Small frickin’ wonder. So many techno-dead ends, computer breakdowns and communications false starts could not have been my fault, right?
Right. Whatever.

In mythology, Cassandra was a tragic figure, blessed with the power of prophecy, but cursed to have no one believe her words. There are echoes of this syndrome in modern literature, where Cassandra’s name is frequently invoked when prophecies and warnings are not believed.
For the last several years, I’ve waxed nostalgic about Christmases past. It is to be expected – I am in the sandwich generation that remembers tales of real candles on real trees, while also remembering the first time my family considered an artificial tree. I can only partially relate to how holidays are spent in these times, in our fractured, fast-paced society which – to quote Oscar Wilde – ‘knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.‘
