I woke up this morning (Sunday) thinking about music and the play I attended at The Elgin Theatre on Friday night. SOUSATZKA. In preview mode at the moment before heading to Broadway, I have every expectation it will be successful if the audience that night was any indicator. The play, based on the Bernice Ruben novel, Madame Sousatzka, evokes and elicits many feelings and mixed emotions. Love, pain, anger, hope, despair, disgust, fear, hate, family….and it is all tied together by music.
Rolling Stone Magazine recently released their latest ‘list’, “The 100 Greatest Songwriters” rollingstone.com). Let me repeat that title, “The 100 Greatest Songwriters”. Their descriptive line states “From Brill Building tunesmiths to Punk poets, from Woody Guthrie to Max Martin, the visionaries who defined music history.”
Yeah, yeah, it’s been a week since the Saturday Night Live (SNL) special, and Bob’s given his views on the pros and cons. But I’m still thinking about what the show meant to me, in its heyday, and occasionally, since.
My last blog on January 26th on “The Wrecking Crew” documentary went through the roof in terms of readership, so Boss Segarini tells me. I think that’s mainly because Denny Tedesco, the Director of the documentary about the session musicians of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, re-posted it to his list of contacts.
Music’s a funny thing; sometimes a song will hide in the grooves of an album, unloved and unwanted, until someone uncovers the gem and makes it their own. A struggling songwriter may dream of the day that a megastar covers their work; in the right hands, a number one hit can make the writer a fortune in publishing.
