It was a epiphanal moment, one where an aura engulfs something or someone with angelic choir background. In this case, it engulfed the first two albums released by new and tiny Ardent Records: Cargoe‘s self-titled classic and Big Star‘s #1 Record. I held them up and asked Gary Haller, co-owner of Eugene’s now famed House of Records if they were any good. They looked good, the slick glossy covers showing artsy pictures of the bands, the neon Big Star sign classy in an Andy Warhol sort of way. “Dunno,” Gary replied. “Nice artwork, though.” I brooded over them for the next hour or so, pulling other records from the racks to read liner notes I had already read numerous times, hoping that this time I would find inspiration. To buy. To listen. To covet.

Some of you understand, mostly musicians who spend a lot of energy and time helping out those in need. Others shrug it off because they know either that there is no good music anymore so what good would it do, or that musicians are either children avoiding growing up or are millionaires waiting for the train. Don’t tell that to the people at Sweet Relief or Musicares or any of the other charity organizations out there. There is a lot of hard work being laid down by scores of musicians and music people, aware that good fortune can turn sour at the drop of a hat.

Home of danish pastry. Kind of. The Danish, one of the States’ most treasured pastries, might easily have been labeled the Austrian but for the Great Danish Pastry Strike of 1850. Seems like the strikers told the bakeries to take a flying suck at a rolling donut (or Danish, if you prefer), so the bakeries imported artisans from Austria. Now that, sports fans, is interesting. If you like Danishes, anyway. Or Denmark.
