Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – “Get Up And Get Your Grammy Out Of Here”

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , on February 14, 2013 by segarini

Shanghai Aug 2012Apologies to Kiss for the title.

I am a sucker for awards shows. When the rabbit ears permit I will watch them all. Of course music award shows are closest to my heart and the Grammy Awards are at the top of the heap.

In January of 1986 I started working at MCA Records Canada as Motown Records Label Manager.  Motown had been distributed by Quality Records in Canada but when MCA bought a stake in the legendary label the distribution moved over to MCA and I moved along with them.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Listing D-D-D-David

Shanghai Aug 2012We are on the eve of the return of the thin white duke. On March 12, 2013 we will see the release of the Tony Visconti produced “The Next Day”. Bowie surprised everyone on his 66th birthday (January 8th) when he released a new single and video for “Where Are We Now” and also announced he had recorded the full length “The Next Day”. Most of us had given up any hope of hearing new music from Bowie as the rumours of his health had not been good for close to the last decade. He is reported to have suffered a heart attack in 2004 and his output since then has been limited to a few one-off guest appearances on record as well as two appearances with Arca

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – The Current List

Shanghai Aug 2012

I don’t listen to much radio. When it is on in the house it is usually on 680 News for news and weather updates. Occasionally CBC Radio 1 or 2 will be heard in the kitchen or perhaps NewsTalk 1010. I never listen to radio on-line. I don’t listen to radio for new music. I will listen to rock radio if one of my artists doing a live interview. When I am out of the house I always have my iPod on. This is where I listen to new music but, obviously, I have to program the iPod with playlists and the one I listen to most often is simply called “Current”.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Listing The Bars

Shanghai Aug 2012

There nothing better than seeing a great band in a bar. The combination of close proximity, alcohol, loudness and being able to work your way within feet of the band can make for a magical night. Catching that opening act on the way up or the once arena status group on their way down can be equally rewarding. In most cases bar shows let you interact directly with the artist as they are usually somewhere near the merchandise table trying to meet new friends or hold on to fans who have always been there.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Lists

Shanghai Aug 2012I love lists, especially when they pertain to music.  I had a great chat with Now Weekly Editor/Publisher Michael Hollett last month as he was putting together the “50 Best Toronto Albums Ever” (which was Now’s cover story last week).  More on that later. My love of lists began in 1977 with the publication of “The Book Of Lists” written by David Wallechinsky, Irving Wallace and Amy Wallace. As a teenager it quickly replaced the “Guinness Book Of World Records” as the time wasting no-brainer book that you could pick up anytime, turn to any page, and by mesmerized by the amount of fascinating trivia.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – That’s A Wrap

Shanghai Aug 2012I never get sick. That being said I am sitting here sucking back chicken noodle soup and trying to fight off a flu which is usually far too nervous to invade my body. I shouldn’t have gone out on Monday as it started to set in but I had to drop by the NXNE Christmas party, stop by The Rivoli to wish my friend Todd Pinnell the best of luck of his new adventures as he said goodbye to his beloved club, pop into The Horseshoe to check out Sid Johnson and then head to the Bovine for their annual X-Mess Party.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Christmas Part Two

Shanghai Aug 2012Before we go back to the Christmas playlist let’s recap the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame Class of Class of 2013. When the long list was revealed a few months back I predicted who would, and wouldn’t, be inducted this year. With the exception of Deep Purple I was pretty close to the mark picking my top five as Deep Purple, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Donna Summer and Rush. All but the mighty Deep Purple were given the nod as well as the late guitarist Albert King and Heart. Congrats to all.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll _ Finishing Off The Bobo

And now the conclusion of my Bob Segarini cover story from the November 1979 issue of “Music Express”. Punctuation and grammar appear as they did in print. Many of you read Justin Smallbridge’s first DBAWIS column last week but the three of us go back a long way.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – It Was Thirty Years Ago Today

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 22, 2012 by segarini

I was asked to do a television interview later today for a story on defunct Canadian record labels from the past. Buried in my basement are many boxes of rock’n’roll artifacts and I knew if I dug deep enough I would find the RPM Magazine 1979 salute to Quality which was celebrating their 30th Anniversary that year. Whilst digging around I found my November 1979 Music Express cover story on Bob Segarini.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – 67 Young Street

I have always been more intrigued by Neil Young’s lifestyle more than his music. I now love a lot of his music but it took me a while to get on board the Lionel train (he collects them). I’m pretty sure this was due to my sister. Kelly is two years older than me which now makes us close, but, during our teenage years that gap seemed enormous. Our musical tastes could not have been more different. We moved a lot as kids but always seemed to have bedrooms right next door to each other. We had stereo wars and music wars. We both continually upgraded our stereos as our record collections grew.
