Another week, another childhood music idol walks among the immortal choir. No sooner had we hosed off the glitter and put away our vinyl copies of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” we learned that Eagles founder Glenn Frey had passed from complications related to his dependence on medication to control severe rheumatoid arthritis and acute colitis.

We were sitting on the patio of Hamburger Hamlet…me and two guys I had run into over the last little while at the Whisky and other hang-outs on Sunset, as well as the front bar at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Blvd. Good guys, fun loving, and could keep up with me shot for shot, beer for beer. We had met when both their duo, Long Branch Pennywhistle, and Rand Bishop and I, had worked on the soundtrack for a film called Vanishing Point

The three of us decided to write a song together, bought a case of beer, grabbed our guitars, and headed to the apartment of a girl they knew….

Segarini – I Want….

My Kiddles

One thing I have learned from the Internet (aside from realizing that we have access to every bit of information, both true and false, that exists in the known universe) is that not many of us seem to be very happy. We don’t like the way our lives are going, the way things are run, or the seemingly endless parade of ridiculous events and idiotic statements attributed to people, that may or may not be true. Common sense is dead or dying, and the voice of reason is tiny and can barely be heard through the cacophony of those who shout it down

As you read this my wife Sharon Vernon and I have just celebrated our 19th anniversary. We went to Cleveland to see two of her favourite bands – the American act Red Wanting Blue and Canadian rock darling The Trews who I introduced her to (musically) in 2003 after seeing them in a club in Halifax during the ECMA’s. We’ve done a lot of that on our anniversaries – going to see live acts. That includes Lighthouse on our 17th and Ian Mitchell of the Bay City Rollers (see story below).

JAIMIE VERNON – THE WAGONS ARE CIRCLING…THE DRAIN

Bob and Vermin WARNING: This blog features the oral history of wallpaper drying and pertains to music that’s less than a decade old. Reading it might very well put you in a coma and cause your family to call emergency services.

It’s been a very interesting week in the music business as the wintery cobwebs get dusted away and we start seeing the industry awaken from its post-2014 slumber. There’s something amiss in Muzoid Land and it appears to be the long tail of sins of the past coming back to eat itself.

Doug Thompson – DOUG’S COOL YULE – MY “12 SONGS OF CHRISTMAS” LIST

Doug Thompson

Hard to miss that’s it’s the Christmas season.  Department, drug and clothing stores have all been playing Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”, Bobby Helm’s “Jingle Bell Rock”, Wham’s “Last Christmas” and The Beach Boys “Little Saint Nick”, along with newer Christmas ditties from the likes of Neil Diamond, Taylor Swift, Michael Buble and the omnipresent “White Christmas” from der Bingle (aka Bing Crosby) for what seems like months already.

JAIMIE VERNON: The Top 125 Most Influential Top 100 albums – Part 1

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 2, 2013 by segarini

vernon_1997This week a meme went viral on Facebook of a poll asking readers to identify the number of albums they owned from a random list of 100 ‘Most Influential Albums of All Time’. In the end it was discovered that this was nothing but a front for an app that hijacked Facebook user personal info. However, the debate about the validity of the list itself remained. Music, like all artistic disciplines, is in the ears of the beholder. I expect that had I actually taken the quiz there would have been little commonality between the contents of my personal collection and the ones deemed ‘most influential’.
