Frank Gutch Jr: Anti-Microbials Made Me Do It (and if you think they’re not a problem, maybe you’re listening to the wrong music)…..

FrankJr2I sit here, a pool of phlegm and what would be blood if the body would allow enough into the mix, feeling like six buckets of shit.  My right eye is a stream of tears and swells each night.  In the morning, the eyelid is a peacock feather dried to perfection against cheek, awaiting its morning ablutions necessary for it to even be and eyelid.  I don’t know how it happens because with all of the coughing racking what is left of my body, there shouldn’t be enough time for the tears to dry.  It certainly doesn’t feel like it, sleep coming in short and shorter bursts, the phlegm either stopping life-giving breaths on a fairly regular schedule or spewing itself in massive quantities on pillowcase or wall (both, when a sneeze takes control).  Here’s the thing:  I can’t sleep.  I can’t eat.  I can’t stop coughing.  I feel like those six buckets multiplied by ten and would sell my soul to the devil but there never seems to be one around when you need one.

Frank Gutch Jr: My Love Affair With the 45, Susan James (A Lady You Really Need To Hear), and Notes (The Door To the Music and Music News You May Be Missing)…..

FrankJr2I look back on my life and understand why music has taken up most of my life, though few others do.  I am an anomaly to them– an outcast in a world of careers and families and politics and so many other things so more important and I can see that like Red Green and all of the excellent male role models on The Red Green Show, they accept me like I am, even if it’s not what they usually accept, and only if they have to.  They have had to, I suppose, for I am who I am and that is not said as pure statement but with the realization that over the years I have tried to change.

JAIMIE VERNON – THANK GOD I’M NOT A COUNTRY BOY

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 11, 2012 by segarini

It’s confession time. Some of my devoted readers are not going to like it. It’s related to my disdain for certain genres of music so if you’ve got a strong constitutional defense for the music you love you may want to read the ‘New Yorker’ in your smoking jacket instead. Or track down re-re-re-runs of the Grand Ol’ Opry on TVland. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool music snob. I have no patience or interest in Jazz, The Blues or Country music. I can hear the outraged cries of “whaaaaaaa???” as I write this. I don’t want to hear it (your protestations or the music). You know those sales guys that call your house trying to sell you what you don’t need? You can’t sell me on any of these genres….I have zero need for them in my life. Continue reading

Frank Gutch Jr: Kickin’ Thru the Ashes (Old Albums Rediscovered)….

Posted in Opinion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 1, 2012 by segarini

It all started when Laurie Biagini posted a link to a video (Lydia Purple) by The Collectors, a legendary Pac NW band out of British Columbia back in the sixties (and, yes, B.C. is in the Pac NW).  My buddy Howie Wahlen followed that up by taking pictures and posting both sides of The Collectors‘ first album jacket and the die was cast.

Frank Gutch Jr: Randy Cates Talks About Gypsy (and Rico) and Even More Notes (Pop Quiz at Eleven)…..

I was sitting here in front of the computer this past week and wondering about the plethora of deaths amongst musicians, because it seems like musicians are taking a larger hit than normal lately, and Gypsy popped into my head. Gypsy Queen— Part One, to be specific. “Warning… warning…” to be even more specific. Goddamn but I love the beginning of that song and the rest of the song, to boot, and I couldn’t help but wonder what the hell is going on. I can’t turn on the computer anymore without hearing of another musician’s passing and, truth be told, it is starting to get me down.

I follow Jaimie Vernon on Facebook not because he has anything to say (kidding, Jaimie) but because he has a way of pushing buttons that bring out the worst in people.  When he’s pissed or maybe just  mischievous, he can bring out more of a knee-jerk reaction than an “I Love Obama” placard at a Tea Party convention.  And he did.  Last week.  I can’t quite remember what he posted originally, but I do remember the responses, many of which make me shake my head.  They weren’t pretty.  His response to those was a bit of an I-get-this-kind-of-asshole-response-every-time-I-post-something-not-glowing-about-the-(insert iconic idol here).  In other words, he, like myself, does not love The Beatles just because they were The Beatles and God forbid he make such a statement public.

Frank Gutch Jr: A Compendium of Music Topics – Myspace, Revisiting the Intellectual Property Debate, The Green Pajamas’ Death By Misadventure, and Those Pesky Notes….

Look, I tried to come up with a comprehensive topic for this week.  I really did!  But this past week has been such a jumble of music-related mumbo-jumbo that I thought I might take this time to put some things behind me.  Seems like every time I turn around, someone is promoting this or bitching about that and I try to keep up, but it seems impossible.  I have music to listen to, people, and don’t really have time for all the bullshit!  And yet, here I am, aren’t I?  Diving head first into questions which, like the oil in the Gulf, keep floating to the surface.  So let’s start with….

Frank Gutch Jr: Thoughts On Tom House… A Night With Junior Raimey (and Lost Tortoise)…

While I won’t apologize for this column (which reads more like a review), I do want people to know that I am aware that columns are not a place for reviews.  This didn’t start out this way in  my head, but the words came out a review of sorts anyway, and I can only make an exception for artists like Tom House and albums like Winding Down the Road.  This is a special album, an album which I have no doubt will gain cult status within a very short period of time.  You know what cult status is, don’t you?  Respect given to music way outside the accepted— music for which you have a profound appreciation and a personal attachment.  Welcome to the personal:
