Doug Thompson headshotI love album covers!  Not the shrunken down versions they use on CDs, I mean those gloriously creative (mostly) 12” vinyl record album covers.  I was looking through my vinyl record collection the other day and marvelled at some of the amazing designs of some of the covers.  Now, before we start delving into some classic album covers as well as a few personal favourites, a little history is in order, but don’t panic – there will not be a quiz later.

darrell-vickersAnytime anyone has put pen to parchment or thumb to I-phone to craft a well-intentioned list of things meritorious, people have lined up for days to ladle the cold and lumpy vomit of their disgust down the back of that individual’s shirt collar.   Today is no exception.  Pull out your shirt collar, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, because I’ve got my whisky-barrel-sized ladle and it’s full to brimmin’ with the icy cold sick of my discontent.

CamTime once again for the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame debate. Nominations are out for the class of 2014, and, for a couple of days, everyone is talking rock’n’roll. Speaking of which why the hell isn’t it called the “Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame”? Maybe that explains a lot. Until December 5th you can vote online for your five faves, and the public vote will be used (in a very, very small way) towards the final count.

The Yobs

Greatest collection of Christmas singles of all time? Had to be The Yobs. Their three singles from 1977-1979 (“Run Rudolph Run”/”Silent Night”/”Rub A Dum Dum”) were the perfect renditions for the time and place, and their very existence would pave the way for another band with members under assumed names Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. The Yobs were actually British punk/powerpop band The Boys who swapped a couple of letters in their name in order to work around a bad record company deal that they were stuck in.
