Writing one’s column on the day it’s supposed to post is not the best in planning but it will have to do for today (and last week and probably next week). Right now I’m listening to The Beach Boys song God Only Knows and I can’t stop thinking of all the people that have shared my life, not just in the past four years but going as far back as I can remember. So add the following video I found on FB and a late night conversation and yes, once again my column takes a different fork in the road.

Sometimes meeting your heroes can be very disappointing. They could just be having a bad day or had a fight with their significant other or their manager, or recently received bad news about a pet project…or as is sometimes the case, they could just be an asshole.
On the other hand, some heroes exceed your expectations and then some.
Over the past 40 years, I’ve been fortunate to interview well over a thousand rock stars, pop stars, musicians, songwriters, session players, engineers and producers. The stars usually have a pat answer (although not always), but I’ve always enjoyed interviewing behind-the-scenes people as they have the best stories and usually don’t get to tell them that often.

I conducted my very first interview when I was 15 years old. Before I continue, I think a little background is in order here.
I’d been interested in radio since I was 13, so for my 15th birthday in July, my parents bought me a tiny portable tape recorder. They say size matters, but this recorder only took 3 inch reels, and that was more than enough for me. It literally fit in my hand (no jokes please). The interview subject was my 8 year old brother, who talked about his friends, school and what life might have in store for him when he grew up. Sadly, I no longer have that tape or I would have blackmailed my brother years ago and retired to Kauai.
