Last week the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame did a virtual induction of its 2020 nominees that included Whitney Houston, The Doobie Brothers, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Notorious B.I.G., and T. Rex. Typical of past years during the induction process, the public and media got their panties into a bunch over how their favourite artist has been snubbed.

June19_WhistlerA In the middle of June 1975 my grandmother yanked me out of school so that she could give me the eye-opening experience of a lifetime – a road trip across Canada. Six days and 2,438 miles later we were putting around on the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains.

Ch-ch-ch-cha-changes

I have been slowly getting to know my fellow writers, conversing with them through Facebook, email and over the phone. A what! Yep, a real live telephone. You know, those devices that allow you to actually hear what the other person sounds like while enjoying honest-to-goodness dialogue. Fingers seem to do more walking and mouths less talking these days. We are no longer an oral society. The world of banter, tete-a-tetes and nattering have gone the way of such foods as pineapple upside down cake. (remember those) Mmmmmm……

Doug Thompson headshotI love album covers!  Not the shrunken down versions they use on CDs, I mean those gloriously creative (mostly) 12” vinyl record album covers.  I was looking through my vinyl record collection the other day and marvelled at some of the amazing designs of some of the covers.  Now, before we start delving into some classic album covers as well as a few personal favourites, a little history is in order, but don’t panic – there will not be a quiz later.

Valentine and VerminBravo to those that waded into the Neil Young debate with my blog from last week. I’m still getting hate mail so clearly it hit a nerve. When Neil solves the energy crisis, world peace and how to tune a guitar, let me know. I’ll retract the entire piece. Now on to something a little more frivolous…

This week Forbes magazine released their straw poll of the Top 20 best driving songs. The list is here. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2014/01/14/journey-places-two-hits-among-best-driving-songs-list-really/

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC’s Of Rock’n’Roll – Some Zzzzz’s

CamOnce again we find ourselves at the end of the alphabet. Some Z songs for you at the end of the article.

After the fun reunion with Slaughter who knew my next major show would be Black Sabbath. I received a text from my rock’n’roll brother Stephane Drolet asking me if I would be interested in going to the show with him. Steph was coming in from Montreal as the band was not going to be performing there. Of course there is a Slaughter/Ozzy connection as Slaughter’s Dana Strum is the man who hooked Ozzy up with Randy Rhoads.

Cameron Carpenter: The ABC`s Of Rock`n`Roll – The Hall Of Shame

Last week we looked at the long list for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2013. You know my thoughts and we`ll see what happens come December.

I have been to Cleveland a few times and have had a chance to go to the Hall of Fame on a couple of occasions. Maybe it is because I was Director of Marketing for the Hard Rock Café in Canada and have seen some of the greatest rock memorabilia of all time that I was not completely blown away by their collection. Maybe we are spoilt because there are great pieces all over the world and they are on public display.
